#TBT: The Battle of Paris

On March 30th and 31st of 1814, the Battle of Paris was fought between The French Empire, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the military forces of Russia, Austria and Prussia. The Battle saw the defeat of the French army, Napoleon’s abdication as Emperor and his subsequent exile to the Island of Elba.

The Battle of Paris was a culmination to several battles fought by the Sixth Coalition, an alliance of Austria, Russia, Prussia, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Sweden and Spain, who banded together in the hopes of finally defeating Napoleon. After France’s monstrous invasion of Russia in 1812 and the Battle of Nations in 1813, the latter considered to be the largest battle in European history before WW1, the allies came together and occupied Paris.

The French monarchy was revived by the Coalition after Napoleon’s exile, and monarchial power was given to the heir of the House of Bourbon, leading to the Bourbon Restoration.
